Scale and Cinder: The Last Rider

The bond between dragon and rider was once sacred, a pact forged in blood and fire that kept the Kingdom of Aethelgard safe. But the dragons have been gone for three hundred years, hunted to extinction—or so the history books say. Kaelen, a lowly stable boy with strange, heat-resistant skin, stumbles upon a clutch of petrified eggs deep within the volcanic crags of Mount Cinder. When one cracks open beneath his touch, Kaelen becomes the first Dragon Rider in an age. Now, hunted by the King’s Inquisitors who fear the return of magic, Kaelen must flee across the continent to raise the hatchling that could either save the world or burn it to ash.
